What Is Dirt Cake?
Dirt cake is a classic no-bake party dessert made with chocolate pudding and crushed chocolate sandwich cookies that look like soil, often topped with gummy worms. Crumbl turns that idea into a cookie: the cookie crumbs play the “dirt,” the fudge frosting stands in for the pudding, and the gummy worm finishes the look, which is why it fits right in at Halloween.
Dirt Cake Cookie vs. Dubai Nest Dirt Cake Cup
These are two different Crumbl desserts. The Dirt Cake Cookie is a warm chocolate cookie with fudge frosting and a gummy worm. The Dubai Nest Dirt Cake Cup is a dessert cup with a Dubai chocolate twist. If you’re searching for the cookie with the gummy worm, this is the one you want.
Crumbl Dirt Cake Cookie Recipe (Copycat)
Crumbl doesn’t share its recipe, but you can make a similar dirt cake cookie at home. This home version follows Crumbl’s description: a dark chocolate cookie rolled in cookie crumbs, fudge frosting, streusel and a gummy worm. It makes about 8 large cookies.
Ingredients
Chocolate cookies:
- 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup (200 g) light brown sugar
- ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup (65 g) dark or Dutch-process cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
Fudge frosting:
- ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups (240 g) powdered sugar
- ½ cup (45 g) cocoa powder
- 3–4 tbsp milk or heavy cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
“Dirt” and topping:
- 12 chocolate sandwich cookies, finely crushed
- 8 gummy worms
Instructions
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment.
- Beat the butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar for 2–3 minutes until fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla.
- Whisk the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt, then mix them into the butter mixture until just combined.
- Scoop about ½ cup of dough per cookie, roll each ball in half of the crushed cookies and press it down slightly. Bake 4 per sheet.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are set and the centers still look soft. Cool for 10 minutes.
- Beat the frosting ingredients until smooth and swirl a big spoonful on each cookie.
- Sprinkle the rest of the cookie crumbs on top and finish each cookie with a gummy worm.
Tip: Crumbl serves this cookie warm. Warm the baked cookie for 10–15 seconds in the microwave before you frost it, then add the gummy worm last so it doesn’t melt.
